Organisations which Belfast Zoo is affiliated with

Belfast Zoo is accredited by various ‘good zoo’ organisations. These include:

British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria

The zoo is an accredited member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquaria (BIAZA), a professional body which represents the best zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland.

BIAZA members are assessed in areas such as animal welfare, education and conservation.

They support us in our work and help to promote the work of zoos and aquariums across Britain and Ireland.

European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA)

Belfast Zoo is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), which encourages co-operation between zoos and aquariums in Europe.

They hope to further regional collection planning and wildlife conservation, especially through internationally co-ordinated breeding programmes of wild animals, such as the European Endangered species Programmes (EEP).

EAZA also promote education, in particular environmental education, and contribute to relevant meetings of international organisations such as the United Nations (UN), the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the European Union (EU) and the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Plant and Animal Species (CITES).

It also advises the EU and other bodies such as the European Parliament and the European Council.

Other members of WAZA include leading zoos and aquariums, regional and national associations of zoos and aquariums and some affiliate organisations, such as zoo veterinarians and zoo educators.
