Animal health
The everyday care of our animals is the responsibility of our zookeepers and veterinary staff.
Our keepers clean and feed the animals, observe them and produce written reports about any problems they find.
They also watch for any changes in behaviour that may indicate poor health and allow an early diagnosis to be made.
Many animals often decide to hide signs of sickness because displaying them can make them easier for predators to spot.
If a keeper thinks an animal is unwell, they will speak to the vet on call who can assess the animal.
As well as providing professional advice, our vets have a range of contacts at other zoos who they discuss health issues and potential moves with.
They also use veterinary laboratories throughout Britain to help analyse any samples they collect.
