Schoolchildren visit the Biodiversity Fair at Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo is home to both ‘exotic’ and native species (animals which are found in and around Northern Ireland).

We work together with local wildlife groups to inform visitors about local biodiversity and the issues our native species and habitats face.

When you visit the zoo, you will notice signs around the site which highlight animals and wildlife native to Northern Ireland.

We’ve also put up ‘speaking signs’, powered by a wind-up mechanism, and produced an information booklet to explore links between ‘exotic’ and native species.

The zoo also hosts events throughout the year to raise awareness of local and global biodiversity, our native species and wild habitats.

These include Native Species Week, our Biodiversity Fair and our evening Bat Walks.

The events encourage visitors to learn about the many mammals, birds, bugs, plants and water species that live in and around Northern Ireland.

Our Biodiversity Fair includes a Green Living Day which explores simple methods, such as recycling, we can all use to reduce the impact we have on the environment.
