Research

Phoebe the chimpanzee

Researching animal behaviour is important as it helps us to understand our animals and provide them with the best conditions for their physical health.

It is also important to research animals that live in the wild as some species are so rare, very little is known about them.

This is particularly important for release and relocation programmes, which introduce captive animals back into their natural habitats.

The zoo has close ties with universities and other groups who carry out research in the zoo.

Research committee

We have set up a research committee, made up of zoo staff and representatives from local universities.

The aim of the committee is to make sure all potential and ongoing research is properly monitored and reviewed and is relevant to the zoo.

We receive research requests from local students and universities as well as other zoos and breeding programme co-ordinators.

If you would like to submit a research proposal, email our education team at education@belfastzoo.co.uk
