Role of a vet
We have a team of veterinary experts to help our zookeepers with the everyday care of our animals.
A zoo vet visits the animals once a day and is on standby for emergency callouts.
They also treat the animals when needed.
Other responsibilities include devising an annual care programme for all our animals and organising regular vaccinations, a worming programme and other preventative measures.
The vet keeps up to date with the latest laws about animals and their welfare and what the zoo’s responsibilities are in relation to this.
They also play a key role when animals leave the zoo to start a new life elsewhere or when new animals arrive at the zoo.
This can involve organising pre-export or import health testing, monitoring or isolation and quarantine periods.
