Hedgehog

Our education team provides tailored services for secondary school pupils at Key Stage 3, including:

  • full education visits
  • self-guided education visits
  • outreach service.

Full education and outreach visits

These visits cover the following topics:

Survival

This programme involves three related topics - adaptation, wildlife in danger and conservation.

All three topics are covered but the talk can be focused on one, if requested.

During outreach visits, pupils discover more about animal habitats and how they adapt to their surroundings. They also discuss how habitats are destroyed and debate conservation efforts.

Students work together in small groups, with a different animal, to discuss how animals adapt to their habitats and the threats they face. The findings are then discussed with the rest of the class.

During full education visits, students observe selected animals and discuss how they have adapted to their habitats.

They also debate the dangers they face.

Classification

This topic looks at the differences between animals and examines the advantages and disadvantages of being vertebrate or invertebrate, warm or cold-blooded or of belonging to a particular vertebrate group.

During outreach visits, a selection of vertebrates and invertebrates are used to illustrate these differences.

During full education visits, zoo animals are used for this purpose.

Graded worksheets are also available to help students during their visit.

Self-guided education visits

These visits cover the following topic:

Can You Survive?

This trail uses a game in which students become animals and throw dice to see if they can survive.

The threats which different animals face are highlighted during the trail and pupils keep records to demonstrate the severity of these dangers.
