Animal enrichment

Have you ever visited Belfast Zoo and wondered why there are barrels hanging in the elephant paddock, why are the chimpanzees poking that termite mound with sticks and why are the tigers playing with sacks? These items are given to the animals for enrichment.

Enrichment increases our animals’ mental and physical activity to encourage natural behaviours while stimulating their senses.

Enrichment is very important to our keepers. They spend a lot of time developing and rotating enrichment activities to keep the animals challenged and excited.

You can help us provide enrichment for all of our animal family by donating any of the following items:

  • clothes
  • bed sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases
  • logs
  • cardboard carpet tubes
  • cardboard tubes
  • unused pet toys
  • tools
  • fire hose
  • hanging baskets
  • unbreakable mirrors
  • clear plastic tubes
  • pine cones
  • sacks
  • bungee cord
  • brush or mop heads (natural materials only)
  • netting
  • barrels
  • kongs
  • Christmas trees

We appreciate all support. If you would like more information on suitable items or you’d like to donate, call us on 028 9077 6277 or email

You can leave your donation into our business reception at the front of the zoo between 9.30am and 3.30pm daily.
