Nicole Craig (aged 9), from Comber, was the winner of Belfast Zoo’s ‘world tapir day’ competition.
Nicole enjoyed a special VIP visit to the zoo on Saturday. As part of her prize she was given the opportunity to meet Gladys, Elmer and Harapan, the Malayan tapirs, and also got to feed the ring-tailed lemurs.
Zoo manager Mark Challis said, “We decided to run our ‘meet the tapir’ competition as part of our world tapir day celebrations. We had a great response and raised over £700 for Malayan tapir conservation projects in the wild.’
Money raised from world tapir day has gone to fund a research project run by Copenhagen Zoo, monitoring Malayan tapirs in the wild. Part of this research involves attaching radio collars to wild tapirs. This is to allow the study of behavioural patterns, and enable us to understand more about the unique biology of Malayan tapirs. Belfast Zoo would like to thank all visitors who contributed.
