Belfast Zoo opened its doors on Friday evening for Dreamnight, a special charity event for 250 families from the Cancer Fund for Children, Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.
Dreamnight is celebrated in zoos around the world and has been a great success over the past thirteen years. The event was organised alongside the PSNI and officially opened by the newly appointed Lord Mayor as one of her very first engagements and guests enjoyed some ‘zooper’ VIP activities including the chance to feed the giraffes, meet the reptiles, special feeding times and a range of family-friendly entertainments including popular children’s entertainer Mr Hullabaloo, face painting and bouncy castles.
The Cancer Fund for Children were delighted to once again be invited to Dreamnight at Belfast Zoo. “This annual event has allowed us to provide a once in a lifetime experience to hundreds of children across Northern Ireland living with cancer. The children we support, many of whom have struggled with the isolation they face as a result of their treatment were delighted to get out in a safe environment and to get up close to some of the animals including the giraffes and the lions. We appreciate all of the volunteers and companies who donate their time and efforts to make this event happen.”
Over 40 volunteers from the zoo, PSNI and local organisations helped us in making the event a success!
Zoo manager, Alyn Cairns, said “We are always delighted to open the zoo up for these special VIP families. It’s lovely to see the families enjoying some quality time together and taking part in some of the fantastic entertainments which are onsite during the evening including emergency vehicle displays, vintage vehicle displays, bouncy castles, face painting, children’s theatre, animal feeding times, the once in a lifetime opportunity to feed the giraffe herd and much more! It really was a ‘dream come true’ for so many of the families involved.”
Dreamnight would not have been possible without the generosity of all the local companies who donated their time and services. Belfast Zoo would like to thank all those who contributed to creating a magical evening for the children and their families.
