We are delighted to announce that Belfast Zoo’s red squirrels will feature in an upcoming episode of the new BBC Northern Ireland series “The Chronicles of Mourne".
Narrated by Northern Ireland actor, Colin Morgan (star of The Fall and Merlin) a new four part BBC Northern Ireland Series, The Chronicles of Mourne, takes viewers on a journey through the seasons and through the stunning scenery of the magnificent Mournes meeting the people who live, work and play there.
Each episode explores one season and features a range of local people and wildlife including deer, bees, moths and of course red squirrels.
Zoo manager, Alyn Cairns, said “We were delighted to be involved in the filming of the Chronicles of Mourne. The Spring episode, which is due to air on 19 November, will feature the recent release of two Belfast Zoo born red squirrels into the Silent Valley Mountain Park.”
Alyn continues “We work with a range of native species at the zoo including Irish black honeybees, barn owls, hedgehogs, a range of native birds and red squirrels. We first became home to red squirrels in 2012 and since then we have welcomed numerous kittens and celebrated several successful re-introductions to protected areas in Northern Ireland. Here at the zoo, we work with endangered species around the world but we are also committed to protecting wildlife found on our own doorstep. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect our biodiversity and traditions for future generations and we are delighted that this new series highlights the heritage of such an iconic area of Northern Ireland and the wildlife that call the Mournes home!”
The Chronicles of Mourne started on Monday 29 October on BBC Northern Ireland at 7.30pm. Belfast Zoo will feature in the Spring episode on 19 November 2018.
