Many children dream of becoming a zoo keeper when they grow up, and now Belfast Zoo is offering the chance for young animal lovers to try out their career aspirations with a new ‘junior keeper for a day’ experience.
Belfast Zoo’s new junior keeper experience provides an opportunity for children as young as eight to take part in an interactive experience with a variety of species including Asian elephant, pygmy marmoset, a range of reptiles, barn owl and giant anteater.
The brand new experience will give the next generation of zoo keepers the change to get up close and personal with some of their favourite animals, access behind-the-scenes areas and gain an insight into the day-to-day life of caring for some of the world’s most endangered species.
Zoo Manager, Alyn Cairns, said “One of our main aims, as the only zoo in Northern Ireland, is to inspire future generations and to increase understanding of the natural environment and conservation issues. Interactive experiences, such as junior keeper for a day, help to bring learning to life in a memorable way and can inspire a lifelong passion for wildlife and conservation. In recent years, Belfast Zoo has introduced a range of interactive experiences including the chance to feed our penguins, ring-tailed lemurs and Rothschild’s giraffes. Following introduction of our first adult Keeper for a Day experience last year, we have received increasing demand for a similar experience for children, so we are delighted to now offer a junior keeper for a say experience for children aged eight to 16.”
Alyn continues, “The new junior keeper for a day experience will provide a once in a lifetime animal encounter and will offer a balance between fun and learning, in an interactive environment. Junior keepers will join our team down on the farm to meet our barn owls and to ‘muck out’ the rabbits. They will then have the jumbo job of washing or feeding some of our largest animals, elephants and giraffes, before monkeying around to create some enrichment for the world’s smallest primates. After lunch they will meet some of the zoo’s smallest creatures in the reptile house, take part in some ‘otter-ly’ delicious antics with our spot-necked otters, and finish a giant day by feeding our giant anteater.”
The junior keeper for a day experience is available to book now, making it an ideal Christmas present for animal lovers.
