Are you ‘red titi’ to hear about Belfast Zoo’s latest arrival?

Date: 13 Dec 2018

Santa Claus isn’t the only man in red to arrive this Christmas, as Belfast Zoo is celebrating the birth of a little red titi monkey!

The latest arrival was born to father, Aztec and mother, Inca on 13 September 2018.

As their name suggests, the red titi monkey has distinctive red and fluffy fur.  This primate is found in the rainforests of South America including Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela and Peru.

Belfast Zoo first became home to red titi monkeys in 2010 when Inca arrived from London Zoo and Aztec arrived from Blackpool Zoo as part of the collaborative breeding programme.  Red titi monkeys are monogamous and will stay together for life.  Their bond is so strong that they spend a lot of time grooming each other and with their tails intertwined.  A group consists of a breeding pair and their offspring.   Aztec and Inca welcomed their first infant in July 2011 and have continued to build their family ever since.  With the latest arrival, Belfast Zoo is now home to a total of seven red titi monkeys.

Zoo curator, Julie Mansell, said “Aztec has certainly had his hands full with the new arrival, as male titi monkeys play an extremely active role in parenting.  In fact, they are the main childcare providers.  Aztec is responsible for carrying the infant on his back for the first four to five months and only returns the little one to Inca for nursing.”

Visitors can see the zoo’s newest addition this weekend during the ‘Wildlife Wonderland’, with lots of festive fun for all the family and the animals including the chance to see Santa deliver presents to the animals, make your own Christmas crafts, meet the reptile sessions, meet the barn owl sessions, you can pose for a seasonal snap at the photography base camp and you can even help Santa wrap presents for the animals!

Santa will be making some special appearances throughout the weekend.

Belfast Zoo is open from 10am daily, last admission is 2.30pm and the zoo closes at 4pm.  All activities are included with normal admission prices.  You do not need to book in advance for this event.
