Baby lemur twins say hello!

Ringo and one of the ring-tailed lemur babies

12 May 2010

Two ring-tailed lemurs have been born at Belfast Zoo. The adorable twins were born to mum Ringo, who is a first time mum. Both babies are doing well and are as yet unnamed.

Ring-tailed lemur babies cling on to their mums’ fronts for the first few weeks. Because Ringo has had twins her mum, and new granny Mo, has taken responsibility for carrying one of the babies.

Zoo manager Mark Challis is delighted with the latest births. “Ring-tailed lemurs are a big favourite at the zoo and we are pleased to have welcomed two babies. We introduced a new male last year, Elton, and are pleased that he has proved a successful partner. The babies are great and we are looking forward to watching them grow and develop under the care of mum and zoo staff. ”

Belfast Zoo has a group of ring-tailed lemurs in the farm area of the zoo. Ring-tailed lemurs are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. They are facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future.

You can adopt a ring-tailed lemur to help contribute towards their care and conservation.
