Toco toucans come to Belfast

Belfast Zoo now looks after two Toco toucans. These extremely striking birds are most famous for their association with the Guinness brand advertisements, and Belfast Zoo visitors can now see the real thing.

There are less than 220 Toco toucans living in zoos around the world. Zoo manager Mark Challis is delighted to have these birds in Belfast. “We are extremely happy to be caring for two Toco toucans. They are visually very remarkable birds. They have a large bright yellow and orange beak and big blue eyes. We are looking forward to seeing visitors’ reactions to them in the Bird Park. “

The most noticeable feature of this bird is its huge bill, which is bright yellow-orange with a black base and large spot on the tip. This large bill looks like it should be very heavy, but it is actually hollow to ensure they don’t tip over. Toco toucans in the wild can be found in the tropical rainforest areas of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Guyana and Paraguay. You can help towards the care of the animals in the zoo, including the Toco toucans, through our adoption scheme.
